What do you think was your strongest project for DS106?

What (if anything) would you change or revise about it if given more time?

I think my bumpers was strong even though they were not used in our hour live radio show and I think I could have done more bumpers with the many voices that I have been able to copy over the years. I have always admired Jim Henson and Mel Blanc who have produced many cartoon voices. I think if I was in radio, I could do that kind of job to make listeners think that real voice was there.

If I had more time I would have put more time into my video project. I had many problems with windows media player. I then had problems with windows live movie maker but somehow made it work after three attempts. Originally I had many friends from work wave hello to the camera in my Iphone. What I later found out is that I needed to record in landscape (holding the camera sideways) and not portrait like I did. You learn from your mistakes and move on to hopefully not repeat them.

What advice would you give to future DS106 students?I would tell future DS106 students to think about how creative they can get and to think of some really cool projects they have thought of doing and apply them in this class. You will learn about some really cool life skills in the world of technology and also learn how to stay up to date on what the world is using currently. These skills will help a person in the work force at any employment after graduation.

How would you define “digital story telling”?

I would define digital story telling as a way of telling stories through or with the use of technology but in a very cool and informative way. It’s very subjective and nothing is supposed to be what you think it is. It’s to be creative and fun but you learn from it.

How do you think what you have learned in this class will impact you in the future?

I learned that the world is using more technology than you think and it’s important to stay up to date and informed. I learned that if I just try some new things and toy around with something new that I have not tried before or not had time to try; it can be so much fun. This was the best class that I have taken at UMW. Martha Burtis is incredibly knowledgeable and always helpful and fair to the students. It’s a shame that more instructors at UMW are not as good at teaching as Martha. Its takes someone who has their heart in teaching and a great personality to get you to where you need to go. Anyone like most UMW instructors can read the same power point from semester to semester and year to year and just quiz and test you like a lab animal or robot. It takes more of a person to say here, take that risk and I can help you though it and you will be amazed at what you have learned.

Special Thanks to Jim Groom & Andy Rush  for their unbelievable knowledge and assistance with this journey. You gentleman are great people and great instructors.I will always remember my 2011 summer radio experience and will not forget the students and instructors of “The dog Days of summer” DS106 4 Life

#290 Godless America

Godless America

I do not think that Religion should be involved in any academic setting unless it is the choice for student. Religious people want to push their belief system on others because they assume what was taught to them by their parents is right. We do not know if a person’s religion is 100% true. Most religions are based on here say, dreams, premonitions and dreams. Religion is as true as the believer wants it to be. People usually stick with what their parents worshipped and what works best for them. People pick the parts of scripture what works for them. No what is true but what works for them.

Teaching evolution is a great thing because it is what we have proven to be the best explanation for how we came to be. Evolution is yes not 100% but it makes common sense and is provable with all modern and past testing. Since creationism is against the law to teach in non private schools, you are not to each it along side of evolution. Button line.

I thought it was wrong for that teacher to basically be forced to say what her supervision said, just to vindicate him and make him feel better about what he believes.

I think the founding fathers knew that mixing religion and politics was asking for trouble. We can not escape this factor. It plays a role is who is voted president of the country and all other seats in office. The founding fathers used the bible to tell them how to live their lives. The government with the constitution tells you how you’re going to run your life. There is a fine line between the two but when mixed, it causes problems. This can be seen through out history.

I liked act three and what was said. I was raised Roman Catholic (the first and largest of the Christian followings world wide) and went to a private Catholic middle school with nuns but have been very spiritual since high school. I believe in a high power and call it God but I do not necessarily believe in the bible and the 66 volumes it contains. There are too many contradictions and what is written is not something that can be proven. The only thing that keeps the bible a best seller is Christians who have faith that it’s real. The stories have been passed down and the translations are not accurate. If there was not a word in Aramaic that the Greek translators could use, they used what was similar. So the bible can not be read and taken literally as people think it should be.

Constantine was a Pagan who later became a Christian worshipped the Sabbath on Sunday’s while Jews (what was of Jesus) worship their Sabbath on Saturday’s. So Christians go to church on the wrong day. Even Chic-fil-a and UKrop’s (who closed in this town for not selling alcohol and for not being open on Sunday’s) have it all wrong when they close on Sundays. Jews go to temple on Saturday, ever seen a devout Jewish person out on Saturday? ………….Not never! The Christmas tree and Easter are all from the pagans and more to mention here at this link

All the religions have odd origins and can not give the proof that is well needed. Religious people who know this to be true just answer with, it’s all about faith. This is their way to ignore the fact that they know what they believe is really hard to believe for others. It’s their cop out every single time.

What would religious people do if the found out that their religion was absolutely false? Would they be able to make in life or would they lose hope?

I again believe in God but all the religions that have God as the one and only, their ways of believing in are very questionable. I can see how easy it is to be an atheist. Religion is best for teaching the young and how to treat others in the world. When they get older, they should make their own choice of what they want to believe.

Why is it that people have a problem with Scientologist and their origins of their belief system but not have a problem with the Mormons mentioned in the TAL we listened to?

Scientology is way too similar to Mormonism as you can see in these videos.

After you see these videos, keep in mind that Republican front runner Mitt Romney is Mormon. If he has the nomination in 2012 and people read upon his belief system of Mormonism, will people vote him in and separate church and state? Or will people see what he believes in as the same as scientology who these people below are members of that belief system? We shall see in November of 2012!!

I personally do not care what religion the President or anyone is. I respect all beliefs systems as I am very spiritual and I read up on all the religions so I see where people are coming from.  I like to better understand people and not judge them on their belief system. I think everyone deserves that at first.

Yes, these videos are safe to open

Secrets, secrets are no fun, secrets secrets hurt someone

#360 Switched at Birth

I felt bad for the girls who might of had a different life that made more sense if Mr. Miller returned the correct baby. I know that your parents are the ones who raise you as but in this case, maybe the wrong parents raised the wrong kids. Sue seemed to take this the hardest and felt really left out of things.

I thought it was really sad to know that the town had their own reservations and knew the secret for the most part but went along with it and remained mostly quiet. Some people dropped hints but did not drive the point home. I guess you had to be there to understand the importance of minding your own business.

I can relate to Sue a lot as I was adopted from an orphanage and really have felt since birth that I have not fit in. I have not felt like I fit in with my own adopted family and with my adopted brother. My bio father was a professional Horse jumper and my bio mother was actually a liberal arts professor in the country I am from. I know that I do not fit in at UMW as I am not young, white and I am certainly not from the north. The University promotes diversity but that is a freaking joke here. I am not asking for more minorities to come here. That is not the case. I am just saying that if your promote diversity; make sure your student body reflects that.

I am just saying when you know you do not fit in, it’s very uncomfortable. If I had the time to commute to George Mason as I used to, I would. So, I go here for the convenience of being close to where I live. Thanks God I found one class DS106 that was cool and can say had the most fun being creative and learned some really cool things. Isn’t that why students go to college? So when you see me walking around campus with my ear buds in, I listening to my hard rock or heavy metal to drown out the fact I know I do not fit in and can not wait for class that day to end and get to my car and get off campus to the real world. At my job I am so respected and everyone one knows me in the community as a very trusted and fun person to be around. I at least love my reputation in this area and in the mental health/ special Ed field I have worked 15 years in. Enough of my crap.

I was bothered listening to this TAL segment when the one mother was so quick to talk about changing the name of her daughter. It seemed like she had a hidden agenda to mark that daughter off the books for years because she really was not her daughter and wanted to make it legal. It’s like returning something to store you really do not want and need a receipt to prove it, in case someone will try’ to clam you still own it.

I am sorry this happened to this ladies and it’s good they handled it well but I am sure it was very confusing growing up the way they did. We only heard years after the fact and I bet it was hard especially through puberty and those years when there was family reunions. I could not imagine the tension.

Here are some other incidents that baby switching occurred.

The Night I became a Believer in Ghosts (My radio Story)

June 5th, 2011

My Radio story for the Dog Days of Summer.

This is a true story of a Ghost encounter that I had at 12 years old, later find out is world famous in its happenings. This encounter not only happened to me but happens to millions every day and night. Yes, it happens even during broad daylight.

Up until this happened in my life I did not believe in the supernatural or paranormal. Today I don’t joke or laugh at such things because of what this did to me and made me believe that something is there. I am not sure what it is, but something is out there.

If you don’t believe me check out these links below but first click on the orange button and listen to my story, then go to these links to see my experience. Keep in mind that I am 12 years old and what this type of experience can do to a person at this age.

#203 Recordings for Someone

June 1st, 2011

I thought act 1 and the greatest phone message of all time was funny as well as very unique. I thought that it was really cool how one phone message blew up to what it became with the limited technology of the time. It was funny to see that the mother really did not expect this to happen and blamed her son for him not being near the phone when she called. Until the mother admitted it, I really did not think she would have left a message as she did. That was too funny.
I also thought the messages of mothers reminding their sons to wear rubbers in the raining season was humorous as well.
Act 2 Kevin Murphy was great as he worked really hard to get his message across. I work with many people on a monthly basis that stutter and have met many kids who have done this. I think many people are not very patient with stutterers and I think that is just flat out mean. If you give a stutterer the time to get the message out, you just might be surprised what they say. What everyone says is equally important.
Act 3 John Brassfield.
War stories from the field. My brother is still in the Army and he has served as well as many as my friends overseas. I thought the recordings were very chilling as you and the recorder waited for death to come. Thank God it did not happen for this solider. I thought that was very brave to record the battles.
After listening to this segment, I was starting to ask myself. What is the line between killing the enemy and prisoners of war? I am sure those who had to kill others in battle had to ask that question as well. I am not sure what the answer is unless you just were shot at in battle and returned fire.
Act 4
I remember when I was in love once as this guy was with a special lady. I also remember having a long distance relationship and doing what I could to keep the fire stoked. It was great to hear that the couple married and had a child. It goes to show you that if you really work at something, it can work. Good for this guy and great to hear that music and being a percussionist lead him to Italy to find the love of his life.
